Welcome back to our learning space.
My name is Ms. Lara.
Can you tell me your name?
I'm so happy that you made it back.
Let's start off with the song with our friend.
You ready to sing?
Okay.
Here it goes.
♪ Good morning good morning ♪ ♪ It's a sunshine kind of day ♪ ♪ Come join Ms. Lara for some learning and some play ♪ ♪ While we sing a song ♪ ♪ of course we will ♪ ♪ Make our brains strong ♪ ♪ Super, super strong ♪ ♪ Then come along ♪ ♪ Yes come along ♪ ♪ For some learning and some play ♪ Now we have so much fun planned for today.
Play, today, ♪ They both say eh ♪ I just can't help, but rhyme.
Okay.
Let's go to our visual schedule.
So we're gonna do our emotional check-in.
Yesterday my brain forgot to do it.
Not today.
I will get to our feeling superhero.
We've been doing our weekly investigation around black history month, which is a very important topic.
Now, boys and girls in the time I have here I won't be able to cover all of the things that there are to learn about African-American history and culture and really it shouldn't be a separate thing, it should be part of our regular day.
So I encourage you to reach out to your family go to the Sora app, learn more.
This is just a taste.
So we're gonna do that, and then seeing our goodbye song.
Now, before we get to our person and our project, let's look at my feelings superhero cap.
Now I remember I told you that I made this by going to the store where everything's a dollar, and I bought a plastic tablecloth.
And then what I did is I made a little heart badge with some construction paper.
And then this is just streamer that I bought from the party section of that same store.
And I glued it all around and I put glitter and lots of fun emoji stickers, that show all kinds of feelings.
Now, you can decorate your Cape any way you'd like and you can put it on and fly around and look at how people are feeling and see if you can help them feel better or enjoy yourself when they're feeling good.
So let's put on our cap and we'll be super heroes.
So I'm gonna stand up.
Ready?
Here we go.
Oh, I'm gonna make my cap fly.

♪ Feeling superheroes flying through the air ♪ ♪ Gonna find feelings and show people we care ♪ So who are we gonna find?
Look, it's Elliot and baby Wesley.
Elliot's special letter is E. Look E for Elliott and Wesley W for Wesley.
Now Elliot is giving baby Wesley a kiss.
Ms. Lara likes to give you smooches too.
Hmm.
How do we think that Elliot is feeling?
What does a good superhero do?
As he thinks about how they would feel in that situation or he looks at people's spaces for clues.
So let's see, baby Wesley it looks pretty happy to be receiving a kiss.
Look, there's a little smile on his face and baby Allie or Elliot is very happy to be a big brother.
How would you feel in that situation?
I think I would feel pretty happy and proud.
So let's make a happy face, a proud face, and enjoy their happiness.
That's what good superheroes do.
All right.
Now, before we move on to our project, it's time to introduce our person.
So I'm gonna take off my cap and I'll fly around later on today guessing feelings and emotions.
And I'm gonna introduce you to the word that's gonna us a clue about who's behind here.
So let's see, first letter is B. Hmm.
Next letter is... That's right, R. You're getting good.
Then we have, A.
Next it's a, V. And then the very last one is an E. Now I call it a sneaky E because it's hanging out in that word, but it doesn't really make a sound.
So let's see, I'm gonna say the word, very slow, and then super fast and see if you can make out what that word is.
And when you know, I want you to yell it at your TV screen.
Are you ready?
Like this, brave, brave, brave, brave.
That's a right, the word is brave.
Brave means to be strong, to stand up for something even though you're scared.
Our person today is very brave.
Her name is Ruby Bridges.
You might've heard Ms. Southern talk about her yesterday.
Ruby Bridges is actually a person who's alive right now.
She was born in Mississippi.
Now, remember is a map of our United States, it's flat.
The real world is large and a sphere, but we live in a city called Fresno, which is right over here, around oh, right there.
And she was born in Mississippi, right around here, in 1954.
So quite a while ago.
This is her when she was a child.
Now what makes her story unique is remember I talked about the word segregation that meant separate.
Back in time, people used to be separated by the color of their skin.
Remember I told you they didn't use to be able to go to the same restrooms, the same restaurants, they didn't use to be able to go to the same schools.
So back when Ruby was a first grader, she wanted to go to a different school than the one she was in.
The problem was that school didn't allow people of color or black people into that school.
But there was a law passed and she got to go.
Now, when she was in first grade just six or seven years old, she was one of six African-American students that got to go to this school.
And it was an all white school.
She had to go with four Burley federal marshals next to her and people didn't want her there, they wanted things to stay the same.
So as she was walking up to school they used to shout things at her, and her parents and the marshals would say, "Ruby, you look straight ahead and don't listen to anything they say."
Now I can imagine that six or seven years old, having to deal with a lot of people telling me they didn't want me there.
But she went anyway that very first day at school at her brand new school was really hard for her.
She actually stayed in the principal's office all day long.
The next day her teacher came in and got to teach her something, and slowly things began to change.
Now, her story was so inspirational that the American artists Norman Rockwell, painted a picture of her down there.
The picture and painting is called, The Problem We All Live With.
So you can see a brave Ruby Bridges with her school book and ruler, walking with the federal marshals who are guiding her into her class and look in the background, there's tomatoes and things being thrown at her.
So Ruby Bridges is a symbol of bravery.
Remember a symbol as something that represents something else.
So in our project lab here, we're gonna make another symbol of bravery.
And this symbol is going to remind you to be brave like Ruby Bridges, when there's things in your life that are not fair or that you want to change.
So what I did is I made a bravery batch.
Now parents, a quick tip is, if you have a child that has to go get a shot or has to go to the doctor, having a prop like this can really help them overcome their fear.
So I made this bravery badge with a paper plate that I found shaped like a star that was silver, had it glitter, and then I put the words of brave in the middle, and I added a safety pin right on top.
So we're gonna walk through how to make one today using different materials.
So you will need some paper, glue, any decorations of your choice.
Anything you have laying around the house will be great.
And of course, a safety pin.
If you don't have a safety pin, that's okay, you can actually use a little piece of yarn and make a necklace out of it too.
So to start off, I decided that I'm not gonna use my plate, I'm not gonna make it exactly how I did, because you might not have a plate like this.
I'm going to use a different plate, that's a real glass one.
And I'm gonna use it to trace a circle around my paper.
You can use any color paper that you want.
I happen to have yellow construction paper.
And through the magic of TV, the shape is already drawn on there.
So you can see that makes a perfect circle.
And what I do is I take my scissors remember, ♪ open shut them, open shut them ♪ ♪ That's the way we cut, cut, cut ♪ Let's see.
I'm gonna go around using my helper hand, to kind of guide my way.
Now it takes a while to learn to cut on the lines, boys and girls.
It's actually a good skill because to cut you have to use your brain and it has to coordinate with your fingers.
And it's a skill that you learn in preschool and kindergarten too.
So now that I've cut my perfect circle, I can add my decorations.
Now I've decided that I want to write the word brave in the middle.
Now maybe, I'll write it with this fancy gold pen.
Ms. Lara is so fancy.
I'm gonna write the word brave.
So I'm gonna put it right here, I'll write it really quickly, B-R-A-V-E. You can also draw a picture of something that makes you brave.
Look at that, my brave badge is coming together.
And then I have other things I can use to decorate with.
So I have my glue here.
Now I'm gonna open up my glue, and I remembered to close it the last time I used it, so it's not dry.
And I'm gonna make some dots ♪ Dot dot not a lot ♪ ♪ Dot dot not a lot ♪ all around.
And I'm gonna add these fancy pom-poms on my brave badge.
So yellow, black, red, green, another yellow and another red.
Now you can decorate this however you like.
I have some really nice streamer right here, that you can actually attach to the bottom.
You can fold it in half like this, put another dot of glue, and then you can put it right here.
And look, we're brave like Bridges.
