Okay, so, I'm going to introduce you to somebody right now, but I'm gonna give you a letter clue first that's gonna help you decide who it can be.
I'm gonna stand up.

So to make my letter, I'm going to need a little line, another little line down here, and another little line.
Have I made a letter?
Not yet.
I need another big line.
It goes straight down here.
See if I can make it.
It's the letter E, that's right.
E is the special letter of the author that I'm going to introduce, Eric Carle.
So let me flip my board over and learn about Eric Carle.
So Eric Carle is an author and he's also an illustrator.
Now boys and girls, when I say the word author, I mean that he writes the words in the story.
And when I say illustrator, I mean that he draws the pictures.
So he does both.
Here he is.
He is best known for his art, so he used a collage style of art to create all of his illustrations in a book.
So, I don't know if you can see in this picture, he makes these massive papers that he prepares using paint and tissue, and then he cuts them up into little pieces to make forms like bears and flowers, which is something we're gonna learn about next week.
He is also author over 70 books.
That's a lot of books, isn't it?
One of his most famous books is "The Hungry Caterpillar" which is the book that we're going to focus on this week.
It's about a caterpillar who's very hungry and he eats some very not-so-good things and gets himself sick.
We'll read about that in just a minute.
Now a little bit about Eric Carle, he was born in New York but he actually moved with his parents to Germany because that's where his parents were from.
And when he was in German schools, he felt that the teachers were very strict.
That's another word for mean.
And he didn't quite fit in, so he liked to go outside in nature and look at the flowers and the trees, so if you ever look at his books, a lot of his book covers have pictures of flowers and trees because that's what got him through that time.
He moved back to the United States and became an illustrator for "New York Magazine."
He was a cartoonist and that's when he met another book author name Bill Martin and they made their first book together, "Brown Bear, Brown Bear."
You might know that book.
Now one thing I wanna point out about Eric Carle that I always loved is he actually made a mistake in one of his books.
I know!
A grownup making mistakes!
Happens all the time.
He called a chrysalis a cocoon and he gets letters all the time telling him he was wrong.
But it's okay to make mistakes and Eric Carle keeps on illustrating and authoring books.
All right, boys and girls, I'm so excited to share this next book with you retold by me, Miss Lara.
Let's watch the video for "The Hungry Caterpillar."
(fairytale music) It's storytime.
(chimes music) "The Hungry Caterpillar," adapted by the book by Eric Carle and retold by Miss Lara.
(crickets chirping) One night when the moon was shining bright, a tiny egg lay on a leaf.
On a Sunday morning, the sun came up and pop, out of the egg came a little and very hungry caterpillar.
He quickly began to look for some food.
The next day on Monday, he found one apple and ate it, but he was still so hungry.
And then on Tuesday, he ate through two pears, but he was still so hungry.
On Wednesday, he feasted on three plums, but he was still so hungry.
On Thursday, he ate four strawberries, but he was still hungry.
He found five oranges on Friday and ate those too, but of course he was still hungry.
One Saturday, he had a lot to eat.
He ate one chocolate cake, one ice cream cone, a pickle, a slice of cheese, some salami, a lollipop, a piece of pie, sausage, one cupcake, and a slice of watermelon.
That night he had a horrible tummy ache.
The next day was Sunday again.
The caterpillar ate through a nice, juicy green leaf and after that he felt much better.
Now he wasn't hungry anymore, but he also wasn't a tiny caterpillar.
He was a big, fat caterpillar now.
He built a house around himself called a chrysalis.
He stayed in there for over two weeks.
Then he nibbled a little hole in the chrysalis and, (chimes music) he was a beautiful butterfly.
The end.
(fairytale music) I hope you enjoyed that story.
Don't forget to check out more books on the Sora app.
Now I wanna share with you how to make this hat so you can wear it while we do our lessons for the whole week.
So the materials you'll need are: red, yellow and purple and green paper, a stapler or glue, and some scissors.
So, first thing you're gonna do is take a strip of red paper and you're gonna wanna wrap it around your head like this.
And have a grownup help you to either staple it or glue it so it forms a hat like this.
And then do you notice what our hat has?
It has two eyes like the characters in our story.
The big ones are yellow.
So a tip to make it easier to cut is to stack two pieces of yellow paper together and we're gonna cut two ovals out of this.
So remember, get your scissors, use your helper hand, and you're gonna cut around like this.
Now an oval is a shape that's like a circle, but it's stretched out and I'll show you what it looks like in a just a minute here.
Okay, two ovals like magic, see?
Those are gonna be our eyes.
So then we're gonna glue our eyes to our headband like this.
Put 'em right there.
And what do you notice in the center?
There's some other green ovals that we need to make, isn't there?
Again using my scissors and my helper hand, this time I'm going to make them smaller so that they fit inside my yellow eyes.
So here we go.
There's the oval, and because I stacked my two pieces of green paper, like magic, ta-da!
We have two ovals.
Let me see if they fit.
They do.
So I can take my glue, or I'm gonna use a glue stick and I'm gonna glue it down just like that, remembering to get the corners.
So there's one eye and there's the other eye.
I can't wait for you to send in pictures of you wearing your hat.
If you wanna do that, you're gonna wanna send it to this address down below that they're gonna put up in just a minute.
Last thing we're gonna do is make some ears.
Hey, see.
They're an antennae, actually.
We're gonna start at the top here and go down.
(scissors cutting) Now caterpillars, do they have ears?
I wonder.
These are actually the antennae that go on top, isn't it?
Because caterpillars, we learned in our story, turn into butterflies.
And then we're gonna glue those on top too so that at the end you have a wonderful hat that you can wear while you do activities and learning with Miss Lara.
Hey now, looks like we have just enough time to see sing our goodbye song.
And remember to come tune in tomorrow where we'll do some more things around "The Hungry Caterpillar."
