♪ Okay let me put you away and we'll go through our schedule.
So we're going to start off our day like we do every day with an emotional check-in.
So this week we've been singing a song and you've been guessing how I'm feeling.
Now remember with the emotional check-in it's not just a one-time thing.
You want to check in on how you're feeling throughout the day because how you're feeling affects how your brain learns.
And we're going to continue with our weekly investigation.
So we've been focusing on the book "The Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle, and it was one of his most famous books.
And I'm wearing my Eric Carle, hungry caterpillar hat.
I hope you are too.
We're going to do some fun activities and then sing our goodbye song if we have time.

♪ I have a little feeling inside of me ♪ ♪ Once I name it, you will see ♪ ♪ I have a little feeling inside of me ♪ ♪ Op it's... ♪ Happy, yes.

And hopefully you feel happy too.
Now, of course you know, I have something behind my board here that we're going to share.
I'm going to give you a letter clue.
Are you ready?
Okay, let's see.
You're getting so good at identifying your letters.
This is something you'll need when you go to kindergarten and when you want to learn to read and write.
So here's the letter clue for today.
We're going to take a big line.
Of course, we start our letter at the top.
Big line down and then we're going to take a little curve.
Put it right at the top.
Now this is a letter too it's the letter P but that's not our letter.
No, no, no.
We have one more little curve.
What letter is it?
Yes, it's the letter B.
B for butterfly.
We've been learning all about the butterfly life cycle.
Do you remember the fancy name for a butterfly life cycle?
It starts with an M, it's metamorphosis.
Can you say it with me?
Metamorphosis, that's right.
So let's go over our butterfly life cycle again.
So remember a cycle is something that happens over and over again.
We talked about a sequence like brushing your teeth.
Now how a cycle is different is it restarts again and again and again.
So first our butterfly starts off as a tiny egg on a little leaf.
You can barely see it if you're looking at it.
And then it becomes our caterpillar, that crawls.
And then it goes into a chrysalis or pupa, like a little home that it wraps itself around in.
And then it becomes a butterfly.
And can you tell me what happens next?
That's right, it becomes...
There's an egg then caterpillar then a chrysalis, then a butterfly.
Now to help you remember the lifecycle, yesterday we made a mobile, and today I'm going to help you make a butterfly that you can use as a prop or to including your mobile.
So here it goes.
So for this activity you will need scissors, paper and paint.
And if you want to do the hand activity like I have here you're going to want to use a stapler or some glue tube, but that's optional.
So we're going to be making symmetrical butterflies.
Now symmetrical is a word that means the same on both sides.
So to do that, we're going to need a piece of white paper.
Now you can use any size paper and any color paper that you want.
I've chosen white today because it's going to help you see the colors better.
So, first thing I'm going to do is fold it in half.
Just like that.
Down the side I'm going to make sure it's nice and folded.
See it's perfectly even so it forms a rectangle.
The next thing I'm going to do is grab my scissors from on top, two other fingers on the bottom, and in front of me it chomps, and use my helper hand.
And I'm going to cut out a butterfly shape.
Now, if you're not a grownup like me and you want some help you can draw your butterfly shape on and then cut it out.
Okay so I'm going to start here and I'm just going to cut around.
When I think of a butterfly, I think of its wings.
I'm going to make two wings like this, one on top, and one on the bottom like that.
I put my scrap paper over here and open it up.
It's kind of like a butterfly shape here.
Now I have to decide what colors I want to use.
Now I have three colors of paint that I can use to make all other colors.
Those colors are called primary colors.
So I have blue, I have yellow and I have red, there.
So what would happen if I mix blue and red?
What color do you think I would get?
And if I'd want to use that so I put a big glob of glue on there and I'm going to go in with a little bit of red.
I might clean off my brush a little bit here.
I made blue water.
It's always fun to paint cause you never know what color your water's going to turn out at the end.
And I've put some red in there, here we go.
What color am I going to get?
I'm starting to mix, are you seeing it?
Yes, it's purple.
Might need a little more red in there.
So when you mix red and blue together, you get purple.
So I'm going to add some purple.
I'm going to scoop it up, I'm gonna add the purple to one side of my butterfly.
So you don't want to mix it like this.
You just want to add it to one side because later we're going to smash the two sides together and that's what's going to create our symmetry or evenness on both sides remain the same.
Ooh, nice.
Now what if I wanted to make a different color?
What if I mixed yellow and red?
What color do you think I would get?
I wonder.
Yellow and red.
Do you think I would get green?
Why or why not?
Let's see.
So I'm going to take some yellow.
I'm going to take a big glob here, put it here.
There it is.
Now I'm going to mix some red in there.
Another big lump.
Ooh I'm excited to see.
Let's see what color it is.
Do you recognize this color?
It's orange.
That's right, yellow and red make orange.
Isn't that the prettiest orange?
My friend, Ms. Johnson taught me that if you want the best color orange then you're going to need to mix pink and yellow and it makes the most vibrant orange.
Thank you, Ms. Johnson for that tip.
So I'm going to add some orange to one side of my butterfly.
Am I going to add it to both?
No, boo to that, just one side.
Okay, there, get in my water.
Nice and colorful and then tap it around.
And then tap it on the end.
And I have a little towel here that's going to help me wipe it off.
Now what colors should I mix next, hmm?
What about yellow and blue?
What color might I get if I mix yellow and blue together?
Let's see.
I'm going to put up a big blob of yellow here and then another bit of blue.
And here we go, mixing, mixing mixing.
What color have I made?
Green, that's right.
So I'm going to take my green and it's almost time to smash our butterfly together and put it here.
Now this works best if you get kind of blobs or clumps of paint on there and it's a little bit thicker not so thin.
Okay, so here's what I made.
Now wat we're going to try to do is copy this side over here.
So here we go.
This is the best part, you get to smash it.
Let's move this out of the way so you can see me smash.
Smash.
There's a popular movie character that smashes, isn't there?
Here we go.
I always hold my breath because I never know how they're going to turn out.
Just going to smash and kind of rub it in so the other side gets some paint as well.
And look at that.
They're kind of even on both sides I needed to smash a little more.
So remember this is symmetrical when they're the same on both sides.
So you can then use this butterfly and put it on your mobile.
Or I made a little butterfly bracelet.
And how this is a learning tool is as you have it on you can be flying around your trees looking for eggs or chrysalis and thinking about what a butterfly might eat, what a butterfly does.
So parents, you can ask your children questions about it.
All right, let's see.
Hey, it looks like we have just enough time to sing our goodbye song.
