Today is St. Patrick's Day and in the dead of night, a little leprechaun came and played tricks on us.

Now, you know I have something behind my board here.
Let's do our letter clue and find out what it is.
Stand up.
Oh, still looking at that mess.
Here's our letter clue for the day.
Now, remember we start our letters at the top.
So I'm going to make a big line down and a little line across like this and I'm going to make an L, L for leprechaun.
Now many of you might not know what St Patrick's Day is or what a leprechaun is.
If you were in our classroom, at regular school, you would maybe make leprechaun traps and read lots of leprechaun books.
But I'm going to tell you a little bit about it here.
So St. Patrick's Day is a holiday in Ireland.
So Ireland is an island that is very green and lush.
So you can see why green is the color of St. Patrick's Day.
The shamrock or clover is also a symbol of St. Patrick's Day.
Now they say that if you find a four leaf clover, you're going to be able to see fairies.
Now, four leaf clovers are very, very hard to find.
There's only a one in 10,000 chance that you'll ever find them.
So they're a symbol of them.
A leprechaun and rainbows are also a symbol of St. Patrick's Day.
Now a leprechaun is a tiny fairy disguised as a shoemaker.
And what they do is they spend their time in the forest making shoes and guarding their treasures.
They say that if a leprechaun is caught, that they'll be forced to give you their treasure that they've been keeping with them.
So in order to catch a leprechaun, you need to make a special trap.
Do you want to make one with me?
Okay.
So here are the materials that you would need.
Anything you'd like.
So you just have to think that leprechauns love rainbows.
They love green and they love gold.
So here is a trap that I made.
I'm going to show you.
So with this one, you have to think creatively.
So I have to trap the leprechaun and attract them, right?
So I got a tissue box and it had a hole in it, in there.
See, that's where the leprechaun is going to go through.
And then I made it very enticing.
That's a word that means, they want, the leprechaun wants to come, by putting lots of rainbows all around them and some gold coming out.
And then I made a little ladder so when the leprechaun comes at night thinking it's going to get some free gold, it's going to fall right into my trap.
And then all their gold will be mine, ha ha ha.
Do you want to make a leprechaun trap?
Let's do it together.
So what I did is I got an old oat can, Now remember, you can use anything you'd like.
You can use a box.
You can use any old recycling materials you have.
So I have to think, think like a scientist and use my brain.
How might I trap a leprechaun in here?
I think he's going to need a hole, a hole to get into.
So let's see.
I'm going to draw a little hole here.
And then of course he won't come if he thinks it's a trap.
So I'm going to need to cover it in some paper.
So let me get my paper out here.
Should I use the green or should I use the gold paper?
Ooh, I don't know.
I think I'll use the green paper.
So I'm going to cover it like this, or maybe I'll take the top off.
Do you think the leprechaun will fall in without a top?
Okay, let's see.
I'm going to put that right on there with some glue.
Now remember, boys and girls, whether you using this kind of glue or a glue stick, you want to be careful with the amount you use.
When I was in the classroom, boys and girls would hold the glue and they would smash it into the paper like this.
And guess what that does?
That ruins the glue sticks so then other people couldn't use it.
So you have to be very gentle and very careful.
So I'm going to put some glue down.
I always make sure that I get the edges.
Oh, I hope we catch a leprechaun, I could use some gold.
I think I will go to Hawaii with my gold.
What would you do with your gold?
Well, maybe you would buy lots of candy.
Well, I don't know, that's not very good for your teeth.
Do you remember what happened to the hungry caterpillar when he ate lots of not-good-for-you foods?
Got a stomachache.
Maybe you would want to buy, ooh, whole new furniture for your room, that would be a lot of fun, wouldn't it?
Okay.
Here's the start of my trap.
Now what can I put on there to keep the leprechaun in?
I think maybe, what do you think?
How's the leprechaun going to get up here?
Hmm.
I know, I'll put a ladder.
Could I make a ladder with one of these things?
Let me try.
I'm gonna have to stick my paper on a little later, it's not wanting to stay.
Look, let me show you how I made a ladder just like this.
So I took some pipe cleaners and I'm actually going to take gold pipe cleaners because leprechauns love gold.
They spend their days in the forest with some gold and I'm going to put them like this.
I'm going to take some and then just kind of go like this to make a rung on a ladder.
All right, let's see.
Let me make another rung right here.
It's starting to look like a ladder.
Now I don't know about you, but if I saw a sign that said free gold, I might even get trapped in there.
I love making activities like this in the classroom and as a parent.
So the tradition is that you make a leprechaun trap and you set it out on St. Patrick's Day and you see if you can trap a leprechaun.
So here I go, making my ladder.
Here it goes, I wonder if it will be tall enough.
And if the leprechaun happens to escape, they will leave you a little piece of their gold.
Now, for me, I've never caught a leprechaun.
I think I saw one once.
I might've seen one here in the studio.
He was very, very naughty in here, wasn't he?
Can you imagine making this kind of mess in your room?
Oh, you would get in big trouble.
Okay, so you can see, as I'm talking my hands are moving and I'm making a ladder.
Here it goes.
Ooh, look at that.
Here goes the ladder.
So I could even put it on my existing trap here and make it multiple entrances.
What else might I put on here?
Ooh, how about a shamrock or a clover?
Look at that.
I'll put that there, like a little pathway leading up.
Okay.
Come this way, little leprechaun.
Let's see, we'll come this way.
When I add my paper to my oat can, I think I need some stronger glue, I'll be able to decorate that too.
But until then I have some fabric.
Do you see what kind of fabric this is?
It is rainbow fabric!
So maybe I'll put, ooh, I know!
To make it super enticing, I'll put my rainbow fabric up front.
Don't be scared, leprechaun, come here.
And then I'll put some gold all around, ooh.
Yes, there's free gold here, just like this.
All around and then maybe I will put my clovers down.
Now I also have, oh look, there it goes.
I think I'll make it super enticing, have these little gold beads as well.
Should I add some of those?
Or I have some of this gold paper.
That's exactly what I'll add.
I had it here on the back so it looks like lots of gold here.
Here you go, little leprechaun.
Oh, come this way, there's tons of free gold this way.
Don't be nervous or scared to come.
I hope that we can trap something.
Okay, boys and girls.
Now don't forget to make your leprechaun trap at home and you can make it as simple or as hard as you want to make it.
But what I'd really love for you to do is if you make a leprechaun trap, take a picture and send it here to the station.
Our friends here at PBS and me would love to see your leprechaun trap.
And especially take a picture if you catch something or get some gold.
Ooh, maybe I'll wake up rich.
Okay, my friends.
Looks like we just have enough time to sing our goodbye song and then we'll move on to another day of learning.
So let's sing.
