Right now, I'm going to give you a letter clue that's going to introduce our story in our video.
So let me stand up and grab our letter clue.
Let's see, I'm going to make a letter that's going to start off with a big line, another big line.
And it's going to have a little line in the middle.
What letter have I made?
The letter H, that's right.
H for hen.
So let's watch our story.
The little red hen together.
(magic wand casting) - It's story time.
(star twinkle) The little red hen, a classic tale retold by Mrs. Lara.
Once upon a time, there was a little red hen that lived on a farm.
She was very hard working.
(chicken clucks) She lived with the lazy dog, (dog barks) who just like to sleep all day.
A slow (cat meows) moving cat and a nosy (rat squeaks) little mouse.
One day, the little red hen found some seeds on the ground.
And she had an idea.
(bell ting) She would ask her farm friends for help planting the seeds.
"Who will help you plant these seeds?
", she asked.
"Not I", said the dog.
"Not I", said the cat and "Not I", said the little mouse.
So she planted the seeds herself.
Soon, the seeds grew into tall wheat.
And again, the little red hen asked for help.
She asked, "Who will help me cut this wheat?"
"Not I", said the dog.
"Not I", said the cat and "Not I", said the little mouse.
So the little red hen, cut the wheat all on her own.
When all the wheat was cut, the little red hen asked her friends, "Who will help me take this wheat to the mill to be ground into flour?"
"Not I", said the dog.
"Not I", said the cat and "Not I", said the little mouse.
"So I guess I'll do it myself", said the little red hen.
And off she went to the mill.
So the little red hen brought the wheat to the mill all by herself, ground the wheat into flour and carried the heavy sack of flour all the way back to the farm.
The very tired little red hen asked her friends, "Who will help me bake the bread?"
"Not I", said the dog.
"Not I", said the cat and "Not I", said the little mouse.
"So then I'll bake the bread myself", said the little red hen.
When the bread was done baking, the smell of fresh bread filled the air.
Along, came the dog, the cat and the mouse ready to help the little red hen eat the bread.
But the little red hen said, "You didn't help me plant the seeds, cut the wheat or ground the wheat into flour.
You didn't help me bake this bread.
So I will eat this bread all on my own."
And she did.
The end.
(bright music) So I hope you enjoyed the story of the little red hen.
Don't forget to check out other stories on the Sora app and in your local library.
I hear that they're opening up now.
Hey, so you might have noticed this thing on my head.
I really wanted you to wear this hat with me when we study the book this week.
So I'm going to show you how to make this little red hen hat.
Here are the materials that you're going to need.
You're going to need red, white, and orange paper, scissors, glue, and you could use the stapler, or some work glue, and white tissue paper.
Now, I like to recycle my white tissue paper looks like this.
If I get a gift or if I see if I'm at a party and someone's wanting to throw it away, I say, "I'll use it for my project."
So don't forget to use the cycled materials to make your projects.
So the first thing that we're going to need to do is cut the red piece around for a hat.
So what you're going to want to do is measure around your head and see how many pieces of red paper you'll need to get a good circle around.
So I just have 1 year because this is my sample.
Then I'm going to want to cut it, kind of leaving this much flat.
So I'm going to take my scissors and cut it straight down.
And then notice, I'm using my scissors and some of me and using my helper hand to cut straight down.
My line isn't too straight, but it doesn't need to be perfect.
So this is going to be our little red hen head.
Now we're going to need 2 eyes.
Now, what color should the eyes be?
Yes, let's make some white.
Okay, so I have some white paper here.
You can use any paper even just print your paper to make these eyes.
I'm going to fold it in half.
And this is a little trick I use to make sure that I don't take too much time cutting.
And I'm going to cut some oval eyes.
Now an oval is like a circle.
That's a little bit stretched out, isn't it?
Now, do you have 2 eyes like the little red hen?
Yes, we do.
Don't really we use those eyes to explore the world around us.
So here are the 2 eyes and I have my glue stick handy and I'm just going to add some glue to my eyes.
Now I don't push too hard on my glue stick because then it smushes it and makes a big mess.
So here are my eyes, just like that.
See?
Next, I'm going to put the little black part in the middle of my eyes.
Again, I'm going to use my same technique of folding the paper in half.
And I'm going to make ovals but this time smaller ovals that are going to go inside my white part of my eye.
Okay, I'm going to place my eyes there.
Starting to look like a little red hen.
Now I need a beak.
So I'm going to have some orange paper handy and I'm going to cut out a beak.
Now, do you notice what shape the beak is?
That's right.
It's a triangle.
So to make the beak, we're going to fold the paper in half again.
Here our scissors and use our helper hand to hold the paper as we cut 1 triangle.
Now it's important that you cut the tip on the side that's not folded because we're going to glue the beak right on there.
Let's glue it on where it's coming together.
That's a very large beak, my red hen.
I think there we go.
The last part that we need to do is add our chef's hat because our little red hen loved to bake bread.
Now to make this chef's hat, what you're going to do is take your recycled tissue paper hopefully and turn your hat over and glue your tissue paper to the underside or the other side of your hat like that.
Now glue stick works well but honestly, regular Elmer's glue the liquid kind works even better.
So, I'm going to put this on.
Just like that.
Hooh!
There it is.
So, the next thing you're going to do is of course you're going to want to make it so that it fits your head.
We're gonna make it into a circle like this, and you use a fancy stapler or some work glue.
And staple it down right, so looks like that.
And then we're going to glue the chef's hat piece right it on the other side (murmurs) to show you.
And then you will have a little red hen hat that you can wear while we read the story this week.
And of course, if you make the little red hen hat, please send a picture along with your address so that you can receive one of these fancy books with some stickers and activities.
And my friends here at PBS, put the address below.
I love hearing from you.
All right, my friends come back tomorrow.
We're going to do some rhyming with a little red hen.
Hey, we'll see you then.
Mrs. Lara sends you a big hug, a big smooch.
I reminds you to read and to play and to enjoy the rest of your day.
We'll see you back here tomorrow for some more fun ,friends.
Goodbye.
