Welcome back to our learning space.
My name is Miss Laura.
Can you tell me your name?
I'm so excited that you made it back today.
Today is Tuesday, another fun day of learning.
And I have my fun friend, our friend, the pig that's going to help us sing our good morning song.
So let's sing together.
You ready?
Here we go.
♪ Good morning ♪ ♪ Good morning ♪ ♪ It's a sunshine kind of day ♪ ♪ Come join Miss Laura for some learning and some play ♪ ♪ Will we sing us a song ♪ Of course we will!
♪ Make our brains strong ♪ Like super strong.
♪ So come along ♪ Yes, come on friends.
♪ For some learning and some play ♪ Now our friend the pig lives on a farm, and so does the main character of our story for the week, Mrs. Wishy-washy.
That's where I'm dressed like.
Now let's go through our plan for the day and see what exciting things we're going to do with our book this week.
So we're going to do our emotional check-in.
Now one way that we're doing our emotional check-in this week is through journaling our feelings.
Now you made me thinking, Miss Laura, how do I journal if I don't know how to write?
Well, pictures can be a form of writing too.
It can be used to communicate how we're feeling inside.
So we're going to get to that activity in a bit.
If you have a pencil and paper handy, you can follow along.
Then we're going to do our weekly investigation.
Yesterday we made some bubble art, that was super fun.
And I even made a picture of my dog Luna swimming in a tub.
I hope that you got to make it too.
Today we're going to make some icky sticky mud and you can even eat this mud, although it does not taste very good.
And we're going to end our day with our goodbye song or a goodbye smooch.
(lip smacking) If we have time.
All right, let's get started with our feelings journal.
If you have a pencil and a paper make sure you get that out.
So here is my journal paper for today.
It's just a dry erase board.
Now remember boys and girls, we feel our feelings inside of our bodies.
We can feel mad, sad, happy, glad, frustrated, all kinds of ways.
Now I want you to think about how Mrs. Wishy-washy felt when she watched all the animals and they were super clean.
Do you think that she was happy, or do you think that she was sad?
I'm remembering that she liked things very clean, so I think she was happy.
I'm actually gonna draw Mrs. Wishy-washy right here.
I love Mrs. Wishy-washy and reading that book.
So I'm gonna make her and then her bow, and she had a little hair and of course her ears, and let's see, this is going to be her dress and her hands.
Oh, I think she only had four fingers on that one.
(chuckling) Let's redraw that.
Now some people don't like to make a body on their person that they're drawing, but that's very important isn't it?
Okay, here's Mrs. Wishy washy, and here's her tub.
And I'm going to put some bubbles in there.
I'm trying to remember from the book, how she felt.
We said she felt happy.
So let's draw how she felt right here.
Happy with a huge smile, just like that, happy.
Now, how would you feel if you got to go in a tub full of bubbles?
You could even make some bubble art like we did.
I think I would be happy too if I got to go in the tub just like the animals in our story.
So I'm going to draw another happy face here.
There we are.
And because I'm learning how to write with you, let's see if we can tackle how to write the word tub today.
That would be so much fun.
Let's see, ta, ta, special letter T. The middle sound says uh, uh, uh.
What letter makes that sound?
A U and the ending sound says, ba, ba, ba.
That's right, it's a B, tub.
Look at all my journal writing I did around the book and my feelings.
So don't forget you can write about how you're feeling every single day.
Right now, what I have for you is another beginning sound that's going to give you clue about what we're going to work on next.
So let me come over this way and grab my three big lines.
And I'm going to make the letter for you.
So first line down like this, up like this, down again, and up.
What letter have I made?
W. Now you remember yesterday that stands for Wishy-washy, but it also stands for words.
So we're going to read some words today.
They're going to tell us about the story, yay!
We get to read, to read.
Ooh, these are called sight words, and there's three of them I'm going to introduce to you today.
There's I see a. I see a.
Now you'll notice when I'm writing those words they're not all squished and bunched together.
They're actually spaced apart.
See just enough for two fingers in between.
That lets me know that they're different words.
Another thing I want you to notice is there's this funny little.at the end called a period.
It tells the sentence to stop.
And when I read, I start on this side, my left and I go to my right.
Let's read some of the words here.
I see a sheep.
That was one of the characters, wasn't it?
I see a cow.
That's right here we go again.
Starting on the left.
I see a horse.
I see a tub.
Ooh, you got to do some reading.
Look what fabulous readers you are.
So all those characters in a tub, ooh that reminds me of our activity that we're going to do.
We're actually going to make some mud, and put our characters in the tub.
So here's what you're going to need to make this activity.
You're going to need some ingredients because this is mud that you can actually taste.
You're going to need two tablespoons of cocoa powder, one cup of flour, and three quarter to one cup of water.
You're going to mix it all together until it looks like brownie mix.
So let's do a quick mix here.
So I have in my container, my cup of flour that I'm going to take out.
And you know I love to make recipes for you.
This is the first time I'm making mud for you.
You ever been outside and played in the mud.
It can be a lot of fun.
So I've added my cocoa powder to my flour, and I'm just going to give it a good mix.
What the cocoa powder does is actually give it the muddy color.
Now, if you don't have cocoa powder you can also use those little cocoa packets that you might use to make hot chocolate.
Since it's the summer you might have a few extras laying around.
And then what you're going to do is pour it in here, and add some water.
We're gonna add just enough water until it becomes a sticky mess.
Just like the animals love.
Ooh, here we go.
Ooh it's becoming a sticky mess.
Should we add our hands in there?
I don't know.
In my classroom, I always had students who didn't like the texture of things.
And if that's your child, they will either grow out of it, or they will become very intelligent adults who just like things just so.
I never pushed children should try.
So you can see I need a little bit more water 'cause it's not quite as sticky, but because of time, I'm actually going to use the one I've already made here.
Ooh-ooh, I am going to get so messy in this mud.
Now, the reason I chose to make mud that you can actually eat is because when children are two or three years old, which might be the children watching, they have a natural tendency to want to put things in their mouth.
So if you're confident your child won't put things in their mouth, you can actually just go outside and make mud the old fashioned way.
You can get some dirt and some water and mix it all up for our characters.
Now, ooh, that looks like good mud.
(chuckling) Here we go.
Now we're going to put our characters in the mud.
Here we are.
Ooh it smells kind of like brownies, too.
So our first character to go in the mud in the story was the cow, moo.
And what did the cow do?
The cow loved to jump in the mud and roll around.
Oh no!
That's not going to make Mrs. Wishy-washy very happy.
Look how dirty this cow is.
Oh no, we're going to put you right here, dirty cow, so we can wash you later.
Next, who went next?
Was the horse.
And what did the horse do?
The horse jumped in the mud.
And it went right?
In the book, the animals in the farm loved to go in the mud.
And if you've ever visited a farm you'll know that that's true.
It cools them off in the summer heat.
In went the horse.
Look how dirty our horse is.
Oh, Mrs. Wishy-washy is not going to be happy.
What was next?
(gasping) The sheep.
Now the sheep was white as snow, and jumped in the mud it went.
Look at there it's rolling around now.
Now parents if you're watching, one way to get children really engaged in a book is to provide these sensory experiences where they can retell the story naturally and maybe come up with their own endings.
All right, so now all of our characters are dirty with our homemade mud.
What did Mrs. Wishy-washy do next?
I want you to think, what did she do?
That's right.
She cleaned them all.
So I'm going to pretend that I'm Mrs. Wishy-washy and I'm going to clean up all my animals with some water.
Oh, these animals, always getting dirty on the farm.
All right, let's see.
I'm gonna clean them up, make them nice and clean.
Try our best to clean them up.
Might need a little more water than we have here.
(chuckling) I think I've just made them dirtier.
So we'll get a little more water on these guys, and we're pretend that we're Mrs. Wishy-washy cleaning them up.
And then what do they do at the end of the story?
Oh no, they jumped right back in the mud, and Mrs. Wishy-washy would probably be upset, wouldn't you think?
She spent all that time scrubbing the cow, the horse, and the sheep, only for them to get dirty again.
All right, friends, I hope that you try this activity at home.
And of course, if you do try this activity, feel free to send me a picture or a note here at the station.
The address is right there below.
All right, make sure you come back tomorrow.
We're going to be using this same mud, and we're going to be learning about letters.
If they have curves and limes and beginning sounds.
Until I see you then, let's sing our goodbye song.
