♪ Now my farm friend.
The pig is going to go sit right here.
As we go through our plan for the day.
Now this week, we've been learning all about the book, Miss Wishy Washy Wishy Washy.
So let's see what we have going on.
We're going to do our feelings check-in, we've been journaling our feelings.
So if you have a piece of paper, a pencil, crayons, markers anything handy, you can follow along with me.
And then we've been doing weekly investigations.
Now this week's been a lot of fun.
We've already made bubble lot sticky mud that you can eat.
And today we're going to make floating chalk art.
That's going to help you remember your sight words which is something you're going to learn a lot about when you go into kindergarten we're going to, of course, end our day with our goodbye song or a goodbye squeeze from Mrs. Laura, no mud this time.
Are you ready to get started?
Get your paper out and a pencil, and let's journal how we're feeling.
Now, today I woke up and I was feeling really tired.
And then I turned on the television and my favorite TV show was on.
How do you feel when your favorite TV show is on?
Yes.
Excited.
Just like me.
I was excited.
Now.
I want you to think about our book, Miss Wishy Washy the cow, the horse, and the sheep all were excited to get in the mud, weren't they?
All right.
So for my journal today, since I was excited to watch my favorite show on television, I am going to put and make a TV.
Now TV is a rectangle shape like this, and my TV has some buttons at the bottom like this.
And to make sure that people know it's a TV, you'll see in some images that they have these like ear things which you may not know what they are.
They're called antenna, back in the olden days the TV used to have these antenna things.
I'll just draw them there.
And then I'm going to draw some hearts to show that I really, really loved the TV show I was watching and I was excited.
Then I might draw my face right here to show how excited I was.
Now when you're excited, your eyes get wide, don't they?
So I'm going to draw nice big eyes and your eyebrows kind of go up, don't they?
And then you have a big smile on your face.
Just like that.
You're excited.
Now maybe for today's word, I'm going to write the word love because I loved the TV show and it made me so excited.
So let's write that word together.
So I know that it starts with - Ooh, L. Ooh, that's my special letter L, LA.
O, V okay.
- Ooh.
There's something that tickles your lips.
Doesn't it?
V V and then, because I've been writing a long time I know there's these things called sneaky Es that like to come into words even though they don't make a sound.
And that's how you spell the word love.
Now remember journaling is something that you can do even if you don't know how to write you can draw pictures to express how you're feeling inside.
And of course, if you have a strong feeling make sure you watch Mrs. McCarthy's Mindful Minute.
We'll watch a new one tomorrow, but you can go back to former episodes and check them out, but right now, I'm going to give you a letter clue.
It's going to tell us what we're going to learn about.
You're ready.
Let's stand up and go to my board.
Of course all my letters start at the top.
My little happy face up here.
Write this letter.
I'm going to need four big lines.
Can you already guess what it is?
I'll give you a clue, we've already done it twice this week, big line down, up down and up down.
What letter have I made?
The letter W that's right?
W for a word now this week we've been learning how to read using sight words.
Now, when you're in kindergarten you have to learn, oops!
50 sight words.
So these are three that might get you started.
The words are.
I see, a I see, a, so notice that the words are not squished together.
There's a finger space in between them.
And when I read, I started on the left and I sweep to the right and end with these fancy little dots called a period.
It, my sentence to stop.
Are you ready to do some reading?
I'm so excited to read with you.
Here we go.
I see a sheep.
That's right.
Let's go to our next sentence.
Return sweep.
Here we are on the left.
I see a cow that's right.
I see a cow.
Here we go again.
I see a horse.
Yes.
I've never actually been on a horse but I'd like to have you been on a horse?
Return swipe means I go back to the beginning on the left side.
We're going to read our last sentence.
I see a tub.
That's what Ms. Wishy Washy put all the animals in, huh?
Wishy washy, Wishy Washy.
So, as I was thinking about an activity that might help you remember your sight words, I thought, Hmm what would miss Wishy-Washy do?
And my brain thinking.
Hmm.
And then I thought, Ooh she would love art that has some chalk and floating bits all around it, wouldn't she?
So this is what we're going to do today.
Floating chalk art.
And we're actually going to make some sight words.
So for the materials, you'll need our chalk, water, a tray and some paper.
So I have all of those materials here.
You'll notice that I fill my tray up with a good amount of water.
This is a super easy way to make art.
And I'm going to show you the technique first and then show you how we might adapt it so that you can learn your sight words.
So I have some chalk here and you can use two tools.
You can use a Popsicle stick, you could use your finger but it feels kind of funny.
Or you can use a plastic knife with ridges.
And that's what I'm going to use today.
You're going to take your chalk and you're actually going to crumble it right on top.
I want you to notice, does the chalk float or does it sink??
I wonder why, now there's a trick to this.
You actually have to fill your water with color because any of the parts that don't have color will just show up white on it, your paper.
And it actually looks really cool when you put it down.
Okay.
That's enough orange.
Let's try some purple.
Do you have favorite colors?
I think I like the primary colors, red, yellow and blue.
I like to mix those all together and see what other colors I can make.
Now I know it's hard to see in TV land but where I'm looking my water starting to look very colorful.
There's just some parts that don't have a whole a lot of colors.
I'm going to add that.
Okay.
Let's look, we're going to add some black adding some black will make it look extra, dark and bleak.
What do you think, would you add black to yours?
Now, as you can see this doesn't take a whole lot of time to fill up.
So maybe I'll add some smart pink here and you're going to want to make sure it's completely covered.
And chalk can be kind of messy.
So wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.
All right, here we go.
As you can see our water's full of chalk.
Next.
You're going to take a piece of paper.
So I want to show you what this looks like before we do our letters with it.
You're actually going to dip it in a very special way.
You're gonna make like a U shaped, like a smile.
And you're gonna dip that first.
Now you don't want to have it go down into the water.
You just want it to touch the water, just kiss it like so and put it down like this.
And then you're going to use your fingers to kind of gently tap the top.
And let's hope that it turns out okay.
And this is going to get all of it there.
Ooh.
What do you think?
You can use your tappy fingers to just get the rest of the water out.
Look at that.
Now it is chalk.
So you're not going to want to touch it because it will smear.
And I know it's hard to see but there's tons of swirls and fun things to look at there.
And you can actually use different paper to put on there and you'll get different effects.
Now I found that the best way for students to learn sight words is to do fun art projects like this.
But instead of just a regular sheet of paper, I would cut out words like the letter I or the word I, a, see, and then have them put it around the room and this will help them remember.
Now sight words are words that you just kind of recognize as soon as you see them kind of like your name and then you're going to do the same thing.
If you make your words, just tip them in and not too much.
This one got really light, but it caught some swirls on it.
It's hard to see right now.
You're just going to let that dry.
So give it a try, boys and girls.
You're going to have a lot of fun.
Hopefully making your sight words that you can hang up and learn and start with those three.
I see a.
And see if you might read with me in other occasions.
Oh, I wanted to show you what it would look like all dry just like that kinda neat, huh?
All right.
Looks like it's time to say good bye.
Ooh!
And I just have enough time to flip my chart over so you can actually see the alphabet as I'm seeing it.
That would be a lot of fun huh?
Here we go, now I was told that one of the letters in the list is wrong.
It fell over.
Maybe flipping it over wasn't a good idea.
So I have a cousin who has a daughter who does not hear with her ears.
So she told me that one of the letters was wrong.
I think it was the K and another friend here from PBS told me that too, but we can sing it anyway.
I'll fix that later.
