(gentle music) - [Solider] Skipper.
- Brucellosis.
It would seem your flying days are over.
- But if I can't fly, what am I supposed to do?
- [Reid] Perhaps you might be of more use elsewhere.
- [Helen] James.
- [James] I've come home.
- Oh.
(heartfelt music) - [James] Hello there, wee man.
(heartfelt music) - I wish to volunteer to be a blackout warden.
- Oh, good God.
- I don't look too daft.
- Not in the least.
You look very smart.
- First day on your own with him.
I suppose I can give you a crash course.
- Babies are a law unto themselves.
- Are you quite sure about this?
(milk splashes) (cow moos) - Jimmy.
I forgot him.
I let you both down.
- No, you haven't.
I've made plenty of mistakes on me own.
I reckon we'll just have to accept the chaos.
(bright stately music) - [Siegfried] Tristan's coming home.
- The famous Tristan Farnon.
- My replacement, we meet at last.
- Did Siegfried not mention him in his letters?
- No, he told me he'd hired a new assistant.
He neglected to tell me he was now sleeping in my bed.
- There's a reptile on the prowl.
- In spite of everything, I rather enjoyed our escapade.
- I do like it when the house is full.
- So do I.
- You're attracted to Miss Grantley.
- Oh, for God's sake.
- He's clever, dependable, the kindest of men and not currently in a pair bond.
- There's always a place here for you.

(contemplative music) - You always said I was too young to choose farming, that the world's bigger than Darrowby.
I did.

Three German planes came outta nowhere.
- The training's as dangerous as the real thing.
Certainly felt that way when my crew was shot down.
- You never said.
You blame yourself for what happened.
I'm so sorry.
- I know what war is like.
You're disappointed I didn't suffer enough.
- I imagine we'd have more common ground.
- [Tristan] I know that I've been lucky.
- I just, I would enjoy your company.
- I'd like that too.
- The Repulse came under enemy attack.
She's gone down off the coast of Malaya.
- What about survivors?
- [Siegfried] They should know more by the morning.
- [Mrs.
Hall] You're not there.
Mr.
Farnon, I need your help.
- [Siegfried] It's all right.
It's all right.
- So long as there's a chance, I have to keep believing he'll come home.
- [Siegfried] Mrs.
Hall, there's a telephone call for you.
- Edward?
- Hi.
It's me.
- I think he's been in a bad way, but he says he's on the mend.
These past few weeks have been the hardest of me life and I don't think I'd have got through them without your kindness.
Thank you.
Merry Christmas.
