Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship♪ Good morning to a brand new day ♪ ♪ Time to learn and game to play ♪ ♪ Learning things is so much fun ♪ ♪ Learning is good for everyone ♪ (upbeat music) - Hello, early learners.
Oh, I'm so happy to welcome you back to the art room.
Let's start our day off with a hello song.
And it's a new song that I heard in one of the classrooms and I wonder if you recognize it from your room, it goes like this.
♪ Hello nice to see you everyone ♪ ♪ Hello nice to see you everyone ♪ ♪ Hello to you hello to you ♪ ♪ Hello to you hello to me ♪ ♪ Hello everybody nice to see you here ♪ All right, I have the class at Hamilton Elementary School, the TK class of Mrs. Damian watching and I told them, I would say hello to two names each day.
I already got a letter from Divina Rose.
She and her mama wrote a letter and we sent her one of these activity books that PBS is sending to children who write to us here at the station, and send your home address so we can put the books in the mail and you'll get mail at your home.
I would be so happy if you got one of these.
So, try it out.
Now, I also wanted to say hello to Liam, because Liam sent a picture of one of his pieces of art.
Now, the last time we met, we were doing The Nutcracker and we looked at Picasso's Nutcracker.
We looked at the Nutcracker ballet by Degas.
We made swirly trees with Vincent van Gogh.
We made the mouse king like Beatrix Potter, and this foursome of nutcrackers was from the Andy Warhol work where you do one scene over and over four times.
And later this week, we are going to be working with Andy Warhol again, but this time we're going to be doing the thing we're studying today.
All right so, I'm going to tell you that this publishing company the Tilbury House gave me permission to share their book on air, and it's called "If Picasso painted a snowman."
And I wrote a little song about it, kind of like a tune you might know, and it goes like this.
♪ If Picasso painted a snow man ♪ ♪ How would that snowman look ♪ ♪ Would he be like his other work ♪ ♪ Let's check out the book ♪ But this day we are meeting an artist we have never met before.
His name is Keith Haring.
And Keith Haring was an artist from the 1980s.
And he looks like this.
He was was famous in the 80s for his art which was a mixture of graffiti.
He got permission to paint on certain walls in his city, and it was pop art and pop is short for popular.
And this is one of his pieces.
It's untitled but you can see his graphics show that he does very simple art pieces.
And then he has them outlined.
And this one has dogs jumping through the middle of a man.
So, what we're going to be doing is doing a snowman in the style of a different artist every day.
So, if I said, ♪ If Keith Haring painted a snowman ♪ ♪ How would his snowman look ♪ ♪ Would it be like his other work ♪ ♪ Let's check out the book ♪ Now, when I look in this book there are 18 artists we could have chosen.
But Amy Newbold did not include Keith Haring, but I wanted you to know about him so, I chose him.
And his work is very easy.
And I thought we could do our first day of making a snowman in the style of Keith Haring.
I wrote to Amy and Greg and told them how much I liked their book.
And they're so excited to see the show after we do some of the art.
So, let me take a look since it is mystery Monday inside the suitcase and see what we have inside there.
Now, usually I have you guessing which thing doesn't belong but all three of these belong together.
And I wonder if you're going to be able to guess what they all have in common.
First, I have this, it's a branch from a tree that I cut on my bike ride yesterday.
And I tried to pick one that had kind of a hand shape.
I wonder why?
Let's get the next thing out.
The next thing I bought at the farmer's market, take a look.
You know what vegetable these are.
These are carrots.
And I took the end off of one of them so you think, why did she take the greens off?
So, a branch from a tree, a carrot and what else is inside the suitcase?
Oh, stay.
Here it is.
I got from a TK teacher at King Elementary School.
These are the colors that their school or their region and she said, enjoy this scarf.
So there's a scarf, a carrot and a branch.
What do they all have in common?
That's right.
They're all parts of a snowman.
The carrot makes the snow man's nose.
The branch makes the snow man's arm, and the scarf helps keep his head and body together.
Now let's start the art of Keith Haring's inspiration.
Let me set this down.
If you have white paper and if you have a pencil you're ready to start with me.
I think I'll use this on my lap and put it here.
These are the pieces I'm going to use, the blue is my background.
The white will be my snowman, and the gray because after a while the snow that's on the ground turns a little gray.
So, let's take a look.
Let me set these two colored pieces aside and see which way I need to do that 'cause this is not a perfect square and put this here.
Good size.
Now we know that shape of a snowman is using round circles.
The bottom is the biggest.
The middle of his torso is smaller and then his head is even smaller still.
So, I just kind of use my pencil and do it lightly.
And I try and make it kind of biggish.
But you have to be careful when you do it because you don't want to make it so big that his head is super tiny and the rest of his body is big.
So, I'm just doing this around here lightly because you don't want to have to erase too many things because when we cut it out we want to cut out the snowman and have it be outlined.
So, I've drawn three circles though you probably can't see it very well.
And I'm putting out the arm and I'm going to put his thumb up and I don't need five fingers like a human would be, but I'm making this branch crooked and I'm putting his thumb in and putting out a few fingers.
Oh, careful don't knock over the book Mrs. Street right.
Now comes the part where I'm going to use my black pen.
Let me set this over here, because for Keith Haring's work he does all of it in an outline.
So, I'm not going to go in and in each of the circles, I'm going to start and whenever I come to a new line I pick up my pen and make the curve down down.
I'll go around his arm, without going over any of the lines.
I'm just around this part, and go into the body.
Oh, I bumped into a line, don't go in.
Don't cross over any lines, just go around it or I'm coming to a bump stop, go up that line and around the other branch.
If you have to use a crayon or a pastel, that's okay, I just like the looks of the complete black line that the permanent pen does.
So, I'm gonna take my pencil now.
And erase some of the connecting lines so they don't show up very much.
That's the nice part about doing it, and not pressing down hard with your pencil.
And if you have an, a good eraser it gets rid of most of it.
And otherwise, no one's gonna be looking at that because they're gonna be too interested in the shape of your nice snowman.
Now, do you notice that Keith Haring does the things in an outline and I did too.
I didn't add any details.
You don't see his scar for his carrot nose or anything it's just the outline.
But the other thing that Keith Haring does is he makes action lines.
So, first I'm going to cut out my snowman close to those black lines.
But if I cut over the top of them it just tells me I need to slow down some and not cut so quickly that I'd cut off those black lines.
'Cause that's part of Keith Haring's method.
That's part of how he does his art.
So, you notice I'm cutting, but I'm cutting kind of quick.
'Cause I still want to talk about what we'll do tomorrow.
'Cause it's a new artist and a new snowman each day.
And I think you're going to love it.
And I hope your teacher can borrow this book from the library or buy it at the bookstore that's in our town that has all children's books because they are super helpful over there, and helped me find the books that I needed.
But you can always get it from the library.
I checked the Sora App.
It's too new of a book for them to have in there.
But here I am still cutting.
Are you cutting yours out?
Are you still drawing it right now?
'Cause you can do your steps different from the amount of time I'm using.
Remember how I told you you could just watch this and do your art later.
That's what a lot of people do because it seems like they don't have time to listen, look and do the artwork, but you can always go back to the station online and get this video and watch it as many times as you want.
Still going around his hand, I have two more fingers on the branch and then I will put it on my paper and show you the last part of this art is to add the action lines.
The action lines will make it look like the snowman waving or maybe he's shaking his hips or something.
So here's glue stick.
I'm putting the gray after I put my snowman on because sometimes the gray has to cover up part of my snowman as he is sitting on top of the snow, going around the outside.
Remember how much better it is if you go on the outside of each of your pieces to make them stick.
I'll put him on, I will put on his gray snow beneath him, and get those action lines in boys and girls.
If we don't get a chance to sing the goodbye song it's very much the same as the hello song, but it says, see you next time.
But here it is, there's my snowman.
And I'm going to have this hand wave.
So, I'm doing two little curve lines there.
I'm doing two little curve lines there that shows that he's waving.
And here is my Keith Haring snowman.
And I'll put some black lines here too 'cause that's what he does.
I'm gonna put one way across the bottom and outline it.
And this just looks like there's snow gathering beneath Keith Haring's inspired snowman.
Boys and girls join me tomorrow and please bring paper scissors and a glue stick because we're going to do a Pablo Picasso artwork.
So, glad you were here to join me today.
I will see you tomorrow.
Goodbye boys and girls.
