Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- [Tutor] Good morning to a brand new day, time to learn and the games you play.
Learning things is so much fun.
Learning is good for everyone.
(upbeat music) - Hello, early learners, and welcome back to the art room.
The art party room.
We're having a little party because we're moving into summer, and we had a celebration.
The studio said, we've had such a good time with children at home.
Let's celebrate and let them know that we're excited for them to go into summer.
And then we'll have a little rest from the shows, and then we'll come back again when school starts again.
So we've enjoyed you, thank you for sending your art, and your letters, and paying attention and talking about art later in your day, and teaching everyone what you've learned and showing your art.
I've seen pictures of children who've set out a whole art studio in their bedroom, and put up picture after picture of the projects that we've done.
And it makes me really happy.
And thank you to all the people I saw that the car show on Saturday that came up and said hello, in Downtown Clovis.
And since I did have to wear my mask outside, people were saying, how are you Miss (indistinct)?
All the hellos.
And I'm glad you tell me what your name is because even though you call it out to the camera, when Ms. Laura says, and what's your name and she puts her hand up like this, we really can't hear.
I wish it was magical and we could, but I want to say hello to you.
So make sure that you come up and say hi and tell me your name.
And still you can send in your address.
And you know that the studio got all of these books and they're sending one to each child who sends in their home address.
And this will be the last week for a while.
So make sure you do that.
'Cause I know it will have the something fun you can do over the summer.
Now this week we've been learning about Sonia Delaunay.
And let's take a look at her.
She's in those polka dot clothes.
I don't know if she was the one who designed this scarf, but she made a lot of fabrics.
And the fun thing was she would set up the dress that she was showing, or the fabric she was showing on a contrasting background so people could see the geometric shapes that she used.
But she painted this one.
And you can tell this is supposed to be the person's face, and maybe this is supposed to be their hair, and you can see the legs, and she has such muscle.
So she looks like a ballerina dancer up on her toes.
And notice how she put yellow in a half circle here, and in the little section next to the body which ends up being like a pie shaped.
She made yellow down there too because she was showing you, and asking your eyes to go there.
So it's called emphasis.
It's one of the art principles that you show something you really want people to notice.
And I wanted you to see yesterday or the day before we did the prisons.
I wanted you to see how big it is.
Here's a grownup person looking at the art on the wall, and this is how big the art is.
It's really big.
So let's pull this down, get out our table, and we're using cut and paste today.
And I will begin the project.
Now, how are you prepared for this?
I made myself a little square.
I made it two inches and I'll show you what I did.
I cut a bunch of paper into strips and each of these strips is two inches wide.
And I cut that long so I could make some triangles out of it.
And the easiest way to make the triangles, is by first cutting it into a square.
I better put it behind the fabric 'cause when I wear white, you can't see white things.
So look, I measured two inches high and two inches wide.
I'm going to use that for the center of this person in the picture because I'll show you all cover it out like this.
Mine's a little smaller 'cause I'm using a little smaller piece.
But I'm going to do that, and then cut it down the middle to pick a color on top and a color on the bottom.
Then I'll keep adding to it.
But I'll show you as I go along.
So you'll need a straight edge if you want them to be straight.
If you want to just use your eyes and notice how big it is, then do that.
I'm going to put this here, 'cause I really am going to need that as my reference.
'Cause I tried to do one at home and I did it, but it wasn't really terrific.
So it's still gonna be fun however we make it.
'Cause I don't worry about my art being a certain way.
Look, I made a square a little smaller, but I thought that's gonna be too little, but I wanted to show you.
So I'm going to look for what about the middle and how I do that is I fold my paper, but it's not really a fold.
I call it a little crease.
I move it over and pinch it.
And that tells me that's the middle.
so I can move my ruler down.
I need room for that fan of golden hair across, but I wanted this to be lined up with the point.
Now watch, I'm going to go around it with a pencil and I'm going to go kind of carefully so that it will stay it's good shape.
And there it is.
That I could do.
Now the other thing about this is, I can now cut that from point.
I put my pencil down and move the ruler up and I go over to the other point.
That's how I thought it would work best.
And I'm just going to put a little oval here so that I know that's where the face will be.
Now, next to that...
I can turn it to you.
I've just done this part.
The top triangle and the bottom triangle.
Next to that is, like supposed to be, I think her shoulders.
So I will put this here and it goes down to her waist and I'm putting that point right on that point and I'm going to go down touch, up, down touch, up touch.
And then I'm going to go over here for the other shoulder.
I'm doing it symmetrically.
We've talked about that when we talked about butterflies, where butterflies have got some polka dots on the wing, It's polka dots on the other side of the wing.
And then we have that part.
I think I didn't do it right boys and girls.
I think I was supposed to just leave one shoulder down.
So I better cut this and make it into its triangle.
I can always use my eraser and get it off.
There.
That's good.
I'm going to draw...
I could use this as my space straight edge.
(indistinct) I'm going to get rid of those.
I can just incorporate it in or mix it in with my background.
Better.
'Cause it's a straight over shoulder.
I'll make this one.
Sorry.
If you drew it, you can just erase it or don't color it in.
And you can just have a little triangle that's going above.
Okay I've done the top row.
Shoulder.
I can draw the bottom of this one or I could use my ruler.
I think I better stick with this 'cause this is taking me to the right spot.
All right.
I'm going to make that from this part of the shoulder over and make that gold and round headpiece.
Let's see, so that one's the green one, the blue one, the black one, the green one, the blue one.
Good.
Now underneath there were those two red ones here in here.
So I just touch and up.
Touch and up.
I'm just adding my triangles here, there, and everywhere.
There's one next to it here, pointy up.
You can just make your triangles wherever you want.
I'm just making mine look kind of like hers.
And if you like that, do that.
Now it comes to that pie shape in the middle, where I'm going to have to put this triangle down.
The ends up being lots of triangles.
I've never...
But this would be a good math problem to do with my class if I come to your classroom to substitute because a lot of teachers have gotten sick and so we've been trying to go there and help the classrooms that don't have a sub.
And I could do this with people and tell them, let's count all the triangles.
There we go.
I think it's ready to put.
I'm just gonna put her legs kind of chunky.
The toe.
I made her have a pointed toe, but I'll color it in with my black.
That one looks like a witchy toe.
Maybe it's Cinderella sisters.
I'll do her leg a little better.
Put her pointing toe there, and her heel and up.
Made her leg a little chubby.
Maybe she's been riding her bike a lot.
I know when I ride my bike, my legs get really strong.
I'm going to make sure this is where the black one is.
All right.
Now I can use my colored paper now and get ready to glue.
And I will use this triangle as my pattern.
I put it on the edge and go point to point, and glue it where I want it.
Oh lead.
Oh dear I have to just do this to it.
'Cause it popped off.
It's near the end of its life.
There we go.
And I think I will put... What color here.
I'll put two the same.
Do I want to do it green like she did?
Nope.
I think I'll put orange on there.
So I can put my square, cut it in half, point to point, and can glue it on there.
This'll go even faster that I put the glue stick on the place and just put my pieces on there.
I'll do orange and orange.
What will I like below?
I think I'll put red and red on those.
So here goes my glue stick, putting it on there.
Get this and make it to red square.
But watch how I do that.
I go up to the point and cut it off in corner to corner, that makes two triangles.
Move this off of here, and put the red ones down there.
I'm doing it symmetrical kind of like she did, just not using the same colors that she did.
Which is just fine.
I think I'll do yellow as the shoulder one.
And how do I do it?
I put my triangle on there and to make it a square, I just cut straight across, and then go point to point.
Put it on.
Didn't I put the glue?
No, I did not.
So next to that, maybe I'll put it on the shoulder.
There and there.
Since I have that one big black triangle up right under her face.
I should probably put some black to balance it out at the bottom like she did.
I wonder if those are like supposed to be her hands off to the side, put a little glue there.
I need to so I'm going to...
Even though this has a triangle ready for me, I like it when I do this square.
And do it straight cut right to the end of that.
And go point to point.
Add this here, and add this one here.
Still adding colors and putting... Or maybe I'll put the green on these two.
That glue stick is really running out, good thing I'm almost finished with the project for today.
I said green.
I like the blue.
Maybe I want the blue or maybe she's sad.
I'll make her have a sad face.
Put the blue triangle as her head.
You know how (indistinct) had his blue period where he was sad after a friend of his had died, and he painted mostly in blue, maybe she's blue 'cause she has a body that's shaped like a fan.
I'll put this one as a green one.
Remember what I do cut to the end of that, and close it off.
Tomorrow we are going to be using watercolors.
Either while I'm using my watercolor pencils, but you can use watercolors.
We're going to do another thing about clothing and dresses that she did with three ladies wearing different dresses.
And it's gonna take quite a bit of time 'cause each dress has a different pattern on it.
It's called three women.
So be ready to work with that tomorrow by bringing your watercolors, or watercolor pencils, or any coloring tools you can use.
I'm gonna draw it with a pencil first, and then color it in with the water colors.
Thank you for joining me today boys and girls, and I will see you tomorrow.
Goodbye everyone.
