Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(classical instrumentals) - My name is Laura Marcus, and I'm playing young, Eliza Scarlet.
- Lizzie, what are you doing home?
- As soon as I got the script for this project, and knew that I was on it, I was genuinely just absolutely over the moon.
- Let's go find your father, and bring him here.
- It would help his inquiries if we could at least tell him the name of our suspect.
- Our suspect?
My name is Matt Olsen, I am playing William Wellington, otherwise known as the the young Duke.
(metal door slams) - Happy being here?
- When I get back, bring him to my office.
- It was about seeing the relationship between Eliza and the Duke.
- What exactly are you doing with my father, anyway?
- He said you'd ask that, and he said not to tell you.
And, the way they react to each other, the push-pull effect, the way they repel, the rivalry, the trust.
- Are you teasing me?
- Yes.
(Eliza scoffs) It's been great with Laura.
- No, he's awful.
- We hit it off straight away, yeah.
- Oh, God, he's a nightmare, honestly.
(Matt laughs) - We're a long way into the series now, and I think it's, it's great to see where all that spark started.
- I was absolutely delighted.
I think it's genius.
There's so much history there, so to get to see that, a little clip of them as young Duke and Eliza is really exciting.
- I'm a guest in this house.
- Oh, well then perhaps you might show some basic courtesy.
We'll start with "please" and "thank you."
Then move on to eating like a gentleman, and not a pig in a trough.
I think it's, kind of, to remind audiences, firstly, just to show them how these guys met, and also to remind us of that drive that Eliza had when she was younger, and how much she had to fight in order to be in the position where she is.
- Look, I know you wish to follow in my footsteps, but as I have told you before, it is impossible.
- So, instead I'm to spend the rest of my days drinking tea with the dullest people known to humanity.
There are enormous shoes to fill on such a tiny lady, and so I would just really carefully watch everything Kate does.
You could never live up to Kate, but I hope I've done it justice.
- I've been given something really fun to do, whereby, we have a character who's established, that everyone loves and adores, and that's the beauty of this episode, the juxtaposition of he's got nothing.
He's come from nothing.
- Do you own a dinner suit?
- Let me see.
No.
(Eliza scoffs) Whenever we're together, we're thick as thieves, it's good fun.
- It's been really nice having him with me in Eliza Land, and us going through this experience together.
Cheers.
(gentle twinkly music)
