Arts Report: NH Gentlemen Song Festival
Clip | 6m 4sVideo has Closed Captions
A new singing club, the NH Gentlemen, comes to the UNH campus in order to restore pride.
How do you generate school pride? With music, of course! In 1980, the UNH singing group, the NH Gentlemen, organized a Song Festival with the Brown University Hijinx, the Wellesley College Widows, and the Middlebury College Mischords. Arts Report takes a look as these students perform school pride songs and some old favorites to the delight of their audiences.

New Hampshire, Alma Mater all hail, all hail to thee!
Behind thee tow’r the mountains.
Before thee roars the sea Thy sons and daughters ever Thy praises loud will sing New Hampshire, Alma Mater accept our offering We love thee, old New Hampshire And to the white and blue where’er our work shall call us We always will be true We’ll ever guard thy honor Bright shall they mem’ry be New Hampshire, Alma Mater All hail, all hail to thee!
(applause) The festival, mainly, is a outgrowth of an idea I had, years ago, to get a number of groups together to sing and have a good time.
The groups we have performing here tonight are from Brown, the University of Brown Hijinx, the Wellesley Widows of Wellesley College, Mass, and the Mischords of Middlebury College.
We hope, by singing old college songs, fight songs, the alma mater, things like that, that we hope to really get the University of New Hampshire a little bit more involved in them, in the university as a whole.
To maybe to generate more income for the university from the alumni, to generate, I think, real student pride in the university that has, is really lagging right now.
stand to sing the praises Alma Mater, hail!
coffee and tea and the java and me A cup, a cup, a cup, a cup a cup da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da Good luck, Mike.
Good luck.
And it's three of 8:00.
Let’s get, Let’s get boogying.
John, Phil.
Two failures together.
Let's go out of here.
Out of here.
We make a concerted effort not to structure our performance at all.
In contrast to what a lot of other groups do.
So we basically let everyone do what they want on stage.
And especially in performance, it comes out at peak force.
Yum, yum Bumblebee, Bumblebee Tuna I love that Bumblebee Bumblebee Tuna Yum yum Bumblebee, Bumblebee Tuna, I love Bumblebee, Bubmlebee Tuna Yum yum Bumblebee, Bumblebee Tuna I love Bumblebee Bumblebee Tuna Yum, yum Bumblebee, Bumblebee Tuna I love a sandwich made with Bumblebee Bumblebee We have a lot of audience participation.
Sometimes a soloist will go down into the audience and find a man, run her fingers through his hair, you know, sit on his lap.
The audience really enjoys it.
Shooby dooby dooby, doo wop bop Shooby dooby dooby, doo wop bop One fine day You’ll look at me And you will know (inaudible) to be One fine day You’re gonna want me for your girl Shooby dooby dooby, doo wop bop If we look as though we're happy on stage, we really are.
And I think that enthusiasm and that excitement is carried through in the music and the way we carry ourselves on stage, and the audience is just so caught up in it that it's very intoxicating.
Music can be a lot of fun, that it doesn't necessarily have to be a group that sits down and reads through music and perfects every, there's a certain amount of professionalism in it, but that it's also something that can be carried on as an avocation.
That's a lot of fun.
If you ever get a chance to see a jamboree like this, I'd, I do it.
After all the years I can't bear the tears So bless them all Who go to bat, who heed the call of the begat (applause)
