Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipIn 2013, the Asian Arts Initiative had this#program they called Social Practice Lab.
Local artists worked with the community of Chinatown#North to give visibility to the neighborhood.
And I chose to work with the men from the Sunday# Breakfast Rescue Mission.
There's a program there called the Overcomers.
They were about 40 men#on an intensive recovery program and they were extremely welcoming.
So I spent a few months# with them.
We learned some pop-up structures making cards and we made pop-ups relating to#different Chinese zodiac animals.
Some of the men would mail the cards to their kids.
We also#got digital cameras and they took photos around the neighborhood.
Then I incorporated# all of those elements into pop-up cards, making them large and we exhibited them near the Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission.
It was an amazing experience because I didn't imagine I would get#that kind of reception from this group of men.
