Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipMy exhibition is called the University of the#Universe and it's an exploration of spirituality, cultural heritage and personal growth through my# Lakota Sundance philosophy.
Within the exhibition is a series of seven ledger art paintings.
Each#painting is supposed to represent my perspectives as a supporter, a sun dancer, and a cedar girl.
Ledger art is a way of storytelling and a way of record keeping.
During the 19th century, indigenous#people we were forced out of our lands and with that majority of our traditions were taken away#from us.
So in a way ledger art was a way how we adapted.
Prior to paper, our foundation to draw#on was hides, bison hides, elk hides, deer hides.
Once the bison were nearly eradicated, our#hunting grounds were no longer accessible and paper was the new form of recording.
A lot of#the ledger paper comes from these old books.
You know, it's linen ledger, so it's a little bit#higher for its time quality paper.
These are from 1913.
So 1913, what was happening for the Black#Feet people?
A lot of hardships, all of these atrocities that we were going through and you#know a hundred years later, I this native person, Piikani person has this paper now from that time#period and giving it new life.
The ledger paper they were using in 1860 was blank.
It wasn't these# documents, you know.
So, in what I'm doing, there are these different layers, not only for Native#people, but the larger country we have here and so, that's what I think is great about ledger#art is that you're seeing multiple histories.
This to me, it's about history.
It's about culture# and really sharing that there were all of these creative acts happening in North America and#this is just another form and document of that.
