About The Show
Go behind the scenes of the popular MASTERPIECE series as the cast and creators share insights into the making of Season 6, which returns to the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales where life in Darrowby is finding its rhythm again as the war winds down. It’s 1945 and the Skeldale family is stepping into a new chapter shaped by change, hope, and the opportunities that come with a more peaceful future.
Themes explored in ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL: CHAPTER SIX include the growing Herriot family; there are now two children, and James and Helen have moved back to Heston Grange to live with Helen’s dad. Relationships are changing in the Alderson family, and Jenny wants to spread her wings and go to nursing school. Mrs. Hall has been away caring for her son, who was injured in the war, but she’s convinced to return by James and Tristan. And Tristan has found love with Charlotte, played by new cast member Gaia Wise.
Nicholas Ralph, who stars as James Herriot, takes a field trip to a dry stone wall competition at the Nidderdale Festival, which showcases farmers and cultural traditions unique to the Yorkshire Dales. The iconic dry stone walls in the Dales date back hundreds of years, and as James learns in Season 6, they are much harder to construct than they look!
CHAPTER SIX also introduces the season’s new animals and storylines, including a parrot who has lost his owner, a new foal named Florence Nightingale, and Danny Boy, a racing greyhound. Mrs. Pumphrey fears losing her beloved dog Tricki and decides to breed him so that part of him can live on.
Additional themes explored in CHAPTER SIX include the impact of war, which has taken a personal toll on Tristan, and what the cast hopes for Season 7. Meanwhile, the series continues to celebrate what it always has: community, compassion, and connection. The war may have left its mark, but the people of Darrowby keep showing up for each other — and their creatures.
