It was New Year's Eve of 2009, and I was working at my shop on Main Street Dressers Unlimited, I had some ladies were shopping, buying some outfits for the celebrations ahead, and gifts.
And a neighbor came into my store, Thomas Terrio, who owns a salon a few doors down from me and said, Carol, Hong Kong Garden, the restaurant next door to me is on fire.
And I'm like, I go out and the fire trucks were already there and it looked like, you know, everything was being taken care of.
So I went back in to wait on my customers.
And all of a sudden there were plumes of smoke coming in the back end of my store, and we all sort of panicked and thought, we better get out of here and we better grab what we can.
And the same moment, an array of downtown merchants and their employees arrived at the store from Rand's Hardware and the Thomas Roberts Salon from UPS & Beiderman's Deli to grab all of my soft goods.
And they had, you know, armfuls of beautiful sweaters and racks of dresses.
And they brought them over to the UPS store.
And I would say that within 20 minutes, my 2000 square foot store was down to its fixtures, and the fire department came with these massive fans and blew the smoke out.
And within a couple hours it was contained.
But, you know, we had to get we had smoke damage and I was able to contract, a cleaning company out of Holderness, Axiom Cleaning.
And they met me new years morning at 7 a.m., spent the whole day doing the walls and the ceiling and the rugs And, you know, the next day was a Saturday, which is my busiest shopping day.
And it's 7 a.m. all those downtown business people and my family and friends arrived, and we brought all those clothes back, and I was pretty much open on time.
I mean, it was an amazing display of support.
I still probably would not be here today without that, with that devastation and that loss, and we truly acted as one with our passion for the vibrancy of our downtown.
It's a beautiful place to work and live and play, and I'm very lucky.
