How to Watch Our Hometown
Our Hometown is available to stream on pbs.org and the free PBS App, available on iPhone, Apple TV, Android TV, Android smartphones, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Fire Tablet, Roku, Samsung Smart TV, and Vizio.
This is where we're used to with the Little Leagues.
When I joined at nine years old, first year, the league started and the coach, Ray Auburn, who in my opinion was one of the greatest and we'd always go there at the other end of the field there was like, Marshall's Field is broken into two.
You've got a baseball field.
At one end, it was almost like a smaller softball field on the other.
So we'd always take the smaller field on the other run to practice.
And you know, the Little League park is still there, and that's what we play all our games.
But, you know, we'd have one heck of a practice with him and he was amazing when he'd teach you how to slide, like, especially like the hook slide or something like that, he would do it and we would follow him, you know?
I mean, how many coaches do that for little kids, you know, actually going through the motions.
So it was really something to watch.
And at the end of every practice, he said, that's it.
Okay, you're free to go.
That meant to go across the street to that little grocery store.
I call it that, Chartrains, where we could get a Coke and I'd buy everybody one of those.
I forget the name of it.
Now, there were double size, almost there.
Something like a moxie.
Yeah, Yeah.
And we'd all rush to that.
Try to get the biggest one.
Our sponsor was Archie Slawsby for the Adjusters, Slawsby Insurance.
His building is still on Main Street next to where the old telegraph building is.
And wow, what a sponsor.
And he lived in a beautiful home up in the north End, one of the last streets that runs parallel to Main Street.
Before you turn, I think right on a corner might be Steward or something like that.
And he always had a beautiful pond back there, beautiful place.
But at the end of every season, he'd have his annual cookout.
And what a feast, you know, the whole team.
But not only that, anytime we'd win a game, he would treat the whole team to a banana split at Jeannotte's.
Talk about your treat.
