How to Watch Our Hometown
Our Hometown is available to stream on pbs.org and the free PBS App, available on iPhone, Apple TV, Android TV, Android smartphones, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Fire Tablet, Roku, Samsung Smart TV, and Vizio.
Apparently there were about ten artists that got together and decided, you know, in order to exchange ideas and share with the community that they formed the group, the Nashua Artists Association.
And from that point on, it like exploded.
More and more people started joining.
And then in 1964, they applied for nonprofit status and they were awarded nonprofit status, and it became the Nashua Area Art Association in 2001, because that way would be more, you know, inclusive of the surrounding towns, seeing that we had many people from Massachusetts that belonged.
So, you know, and a lot of it was the lure of like the Greeley Park Art Show.
We have the scholarship program, and this year it's two scholarships for, you know, graduating seniors from the high schools in in and around Nashua, including Massachusetts, that are going to be about 1500 dollars apiece.
And we also provide a booth for them in the summertime for Greeley Park, where they can display their work and interact with the public and know what it's like to be an actual artist out there in a big world.
I was a historian for ten years.
I was also in charge of all the demos at the Nashua Public Library for more than ten years.
And I invited a lot of very famous artists to come.
Some were exhibiting in Newbury Street, but they had no problem coming over and giving us a hint of how they paint.
So all those artists, all those people who wanted to learn, have been keeping in touch.
And I think I feel that we talked a lot through the demos and we are still doing it right now.
We invite a lot of famous artists to come to the Nashua Public Library.
Hopefully soon we'll have a gallery again and we'll be able to do it there.
And we and myself, although I'm in Boston right now with my art, I learned so much from those demos.
So I feel like the Nashua area has done considerable service for the artists in this area.
Well, the good thing about the arts is that the arts have a tendency of transcending any... when you look at a painting, you don't think, Oh, I better bet it was a white woman that did that.
I mean, it transcends race and religion and, you know, gender orientation.
And what you see is somebody speaking from their soul onto a piece of artwork.
And if you connect with that, it doesn't all that other stuff doesn't matter.
It's just the connection of the soul.
My mother used to say, you know how the eyes are the window to somebody's soul.
Well, art is like the window into the soul of the collective society.
