Our Hometown is available to stream on pbs.org and the free PBS App, available on iPhone, Apple TV, Android TV, Android smartphones, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Fire Tablet, Roku, Samsung Smart TV, and Vizio.
Well, the history of Rivier is not unlike the history of Nashua.
It's a combination of mission and opportunity.
The founding sister, Sister Madeline of Jesus in 1933 took a look around Nashua in southern New Hampshire.
And there was no women's college.
There was no college that really accepted women.
The Boston College Saint A's, Stonehill, Holy Cross, They were really institutions for men.
And so Sister Madeline, who herself was very highly educated, began Rivier with seven students in Hudson, New Hampshire.
And from those seven students has grown the university today of 2300 students.
But it was a real commitment.
It was a real commitment to Nashua, particularly as it relates to the the young women of the mill workers and of the number of single proprietorships that were in Nashua.
The Sisters of the Presentation have deep roots as French Canadians and, of course, as Nashua grew and the mills grew, that French-Canadian population grew.
And and those women really were now challenged with a high quality, higher ed.
The core mission is transforming hearts and minds to serve the world.
And then we follow into the next areas of mission and those very particular aspects of mission have to do with an understanding of the poor and vulnerable, have to do with the capacity to search for truth and the Catholic intellectual tradition.
And then what's so desperately needed in this day and age is the capacity to dialog, to communicate, to engage in meaningful discussions regarding the opportunities and challenges of the age.
We have 2300 students who come from numerous states around the country and even around the world.
Their courses of study include nursing, which Rivier is the number one nursing school in New Hampshire, includes education, biology, biotechnology, business, sports marketing and then the, you know, liberal arts and liberal education of English and history and mathematics.
Looking forward, the university has made a commitment to Nashua and to the sciences.
And so with the opening of the Science and Innovation.
Center in 2020, we now have state of the art facilities for biology, microbiology, biotechnology, experimental psychology.
So to combine a Rivier education of transformation with liberal education and then the sciences, whether it's the natural sciences or also cybersecurity, you know, is is really fulfilling a need in the community for workforce development.
