Brooklyn Dodgers farm team Don Newcomb, Roy Campanella, Gil Hodges and Marian Fricano.
The four of them, Marion Fricano, lived in the house next door that my folks eventually bought.
And every Saturday that they didn't have an afternoon game, he took all the kids in the neighborhood over to where the Little League is.
And we played baseball.
Girls, boys made no difference.
And everybody got a hit, because he was a pitcher and he made sure that we at least hit the ball once.
And he did that for between two and 3 hours.
And he told all the parents in the neighborhood, go do what you got to do without the kids.
And some of the other fellows would come in.
But the main thing is, is Newcomb and Campanella, because they were special, they had their rooms at the DW.
Hotel on Library Hill, and we kids would follow and we'd go over for their practices and everything and if I knew now what it would be, I would have gotten autographs, but we would follow them when they got out of practice.
And we were only allowed to go down as far as Fairmont Streets.
And they knew that.
And when they got to Fairmont Street, OK, kids go back .
So we'd turn and stop back.
And then they crossed Fairmont Street and we would wind up turning around and they looked at us.
You keep going back .
And Gil Hodges lived in the house that my folks bought and the girl next door, every time he went out to mow the lawn, she'd say, You got to come over and help me mow the lawn.
So we'd go over and we'd mow her lawn.
But those guys, I mean, you just... they were ordinary people.
And it wasn't like now where they're set on pedestals.
