How to Watch Our Hometown

A passion that my grandmother started in 1989, just with helping the people around her that she saw were poverty ridden or parents, mothers that needed help with parenting or a drug addiction and all that other stuff.
So my grandmother started that.
It was a small building on Toll Street that evolved to a bigger building on Whitney Street, which is still running today.
My grandmother's since passed, but through volunteers.
And I'd say because she'd say, God, the mission is still continuing to run and helping the people in and around Nashua.
Some of my fondest memories happened there.
I remember she used to do annual Christmas and Easter parties where she'd just invite everybody.
People would donate food.
People would donate pizza.
That was the best part gifts, a dessert, ice cream.
And I remember there being kids in my classes that I didn't necessarily talk to or weren't friendly with in school, but their parents or somebody brought them to the mission and they would be part of those Christmas parties.
And one year a friend of mine, Pedro, and I didn't count them as a person that would sing or dance or do anything like that.
And my grandmother convinced him to be in our little play that we were having at the mission.
And we sang a song together.
And I just I just remember that because he wasn't the type that I would ever.
So that's one of those things where when I think about him or his family now, I just think about how young and youthful we were.
I see a whole different side of the mission now that I'm on the volunteer side and talking to adults and everything before.
For me as a child, it was more like Grandma always had those big muffins that came in from Costco.
So it was like the small, exciting things that I would go there for.
Church Sunday School Sister Girardeau Teaching Sunday School.
Again, some of my peers from school showing up in church and I'm like, Oh, we're in church together.
So those built bonds and friendships.
So I see it.
It's a different evolution for me as an adult and a compassionate person that sees people in poverty and the best ways that I can help.
So besides doing like Mondays and Thursdays at the Mission, giving out food.
My biggest task now is to bring funds into the place.
So I'm seeing it on a whole different side.
I feel like I'm seeing it on my grandmother's side.
I brought a whole bunch of articles that were written about her from the eighties, nineties, and even reading the articles, how the articles were written, the words the writers chose to use.
So much has changed.
Like they sat down and my grandmother told an actual story of someone that needed her help.
In my heart I was just like, I feel you, Grandma.
I would have done the same thing, you know?
So if anything, I feel more of a connection to my grandmother and the woman that she was.
