we skied at Waterville Valley, so, my family always came through Plymouth, and we went to Adam's market to get our groceries all the time.
Which is kind of funny, Yeah.
So we came through the town often, so I was familiar with the town, and it kind of was like a coming home thing So in 1983, And I decided I wanted to be a teacher.
And I knew that Plymouth State had a great teaching college and education for courses and whatnot.
So I moved here and I was able to live off campus, on 2 Russell Street, which is right across the street from the Pease Public Library where we are now, which is, kind of ironic because back then, this library didn't exist.
So it was just, a lot and a field of trees, pretty much, but I loved, living off campus because, I was like, just a block from the campus so I could walk to school.
And also downtown Plymouth and some of my favorite places to visit, you know, being only person just moving to a new town, this was a great community to be in because there was so much going on and some of my favorite places.
One building, was called the Plymouth Inn, and then this building it set up on the hill.
It was on Main Street.
And it obviously had places where you could stay overnight, but also inside that, like the middle part of the building was this restaurant.
It was like a, soda fountain kind of place.
And it had a player piano.
So we just used to go and have ice cream there and sit and enjoy the playing.
That music, you know, the piano playing by itself, basically, which was kind of neat and interesting to listen to.
Another favorite, spot was, the Plymouth Theater had two theaters.
It was two, like movie theaters on either side.
And, so you could see two different showings, within the same theater, I guess.
And, that was great for, you know, just get your popcorn, concession stand and candy and go down there and watch a movie.
That is now, the flying monkey.
And, Alex Ray was, actually, I think when he was, reconstructing it, he found the stage in the background.
So that changed his whole idea, I guess, of what he wanted to do.
And he made it like a theater.
It's a movie theater as well.
Like, you can go to, like, see concerts and bands there now, so, like, oh, I wish that was there back then, back when I went to school.
But, the people in Plymouth really get to enjoy that as the community But what I was going to say also is that JJ Newbury's was like the five and dime store that, that as a college student, you know, you wanted to buy things cheap and get a good deal and having, like, hardly any money.
So you go into there, they had a long, soda fountain, there, like, you know, a bar and stools and you could get ice cream and sandwiches and whatnot, too.
So the interesting thing about how my life is kind of I feel like it's come full circle, is that I ended up while teaching at Campton after graduating from Plymouth State.
I, started teaching at Campton Elementary School, taught there for 34 years, and then, retired in 2020.
And then my new career I've written three stories.
And one of my stories is based, on the it's called The Bakery Shop.
And it's based on the illustrations are based on the downtown of Plymouth and the Andersons Bakery shop.
So which was a place everyone loved to go to.
I mean, had the best, you know, cookies, baked goods.
You can order your cakes there.
anyway, my story kind of takes place in that bakery, and I wanted kids to have that feeling of, like, going into the bakery shop and seeing, like, the glass cased, shelves with all the goodies, like, right there on the shelves.
And it was like a real special treat for Well, the interesting thing is the person that I chose, Brenda Cogswell, as my illustrator, she also was a student at Campton, which is too funny.
And I met her, like, later in life, and, I had a drawing of what I the feeling I wanted to create.
And she goes, oh, Anderson's bakery.
And I'm like, yes.
And she goes, oh, I know Anderson's Bakery.
And I'm like, this is great.
I said, that kind of feel is what I want for this story.
So her and I were on the same page on that, and I didn't have to explain further because she had been to that same bakery shop that we all loved.
Yeah.
it's a really win win.
And it's just so nice to see, you know, like I just feel like, you know, coming back to Plymouth and, just there's it's just a great community really is it's a wonderful place to live and a great community.
And you're surrounded by this beauty of the mountains.
